The North Florida Chapter has developed and maintains an active school participation program through its Science and Education Committee. This program is highlighted by presentations to local area schools, particularly at the elementary and high school levels, science fair participation, and the organization of the newly formed Tallahassee/Florida High K-12 local chapter/weather club. Typically in our presentations, three to six chapter members give a 45 minute presentation on the weather, tailored to a specific age level, and follow that up with a brief question and answer session. Supporting materials are drawn from local and national agencies, such as the Tallahassee Natl. Weather Service, the Natl. Hurricane Center, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Successful presentations in the past have been made to groups at Fairview Middle, Riley Elementary, and Godby High in Tallahassee, among others. We are currently featuring programs on a weekly to biweekly basis throughout the 2006-2007 academic year in the Tallahassee region and would be happy to present to your students or other group interested in the weather. Current and past programs include Science Olympiad training and judging at Fairview Middle, school presentations at Chiles High, assistance with a learning grant program for disabled children in Madison Co., FL, and development of our own materials, guidelines, and programs to support current and future presentations. If you have any questions or comments regarding our school programs, would like further information, or are interested in having us present to your group, please feel free to contact our Coordinator of Academic Programs, northflams@gmail.com. Thanks for your interest in the North Florida Chapter of the AMS and its outreach programs. |
