Cerese Albers - 2005-2006 Treasurer

Welcome to the start of the Fall semester everyone! My name is Cerese Albers and I am the current Treasurer of the North Florida Chapter of the American Meteorological Society. I grew up in a small Long Island community called West Islip in New York where I graduated and left to study meteorology here at FSU. I am a senior in the department and my focus is on remote sensing of hurricanes and also on climatology. This past summer I interned at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD where my project centered on in situ aircraft observations to estimate the microphysical ice particles in hurricanes, which are directly linked to hurricane intensity forecasting.

I am the chair of the chapter’s Membership Committee as well. I feel it is a vital component of the chapter and is essential to its success. Without a decent size membership, there are not enough people left to continue the chapter after the current membership graduates. That said, the committee’s main function is to get the word out about our organization and provide our message to everyone about the benefits of joining. This is what the Membership Committee is in charge of doing. Input is needed about adding new benefits, advertising the ones that already exist and helping to establish and maintain a base membership of actively involved members. Beginning with this academic year, our chapter is reaching out into the surrounding communities throughout the north Florida, south Georgia and southeastern Alabama regions to create satellite chapters of our own chapter. This process starts at home here in Tallahassee with setting up the local programs for the K-12 group and encouraging the young students in our area to join.

A strong base of young membership with our guidance can foster a conducive environment for future meteorologists or even just weather enthusiasts. This is where you, the member, come into play. The Membership Committee needs your help to formulate ideas and to help us reach out to these communities. There are a lot of people just in Tallahassee who would like to be part of our organization but either don’t know how to go about it or don’t even know that we exist! Remember that community service hours are likely to be involved and that being a part of a committee like this one can be a rewarding opportunity for you without a ton of hours committed. Contact me about how you can help by joining the Membership Committee and we can ensure that our wonderful chapter has as bright a future as it has at present. Email me at northflams@gmail.com to get started!

Looking forward to a successful year,

Cerese M. Albers
