October 6, 2004 Science & Education Committee Report

The Science & Education Committee of the North Florida Chapter of the AMS met as a group on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at 7:30pm at The Loop Pizza Grille on Tennessee St. in downtown Tallahassee. The meeting was kept relatively short due to various circumstances, but a wide array of topics was discussed nonetheless, including progress made on tasks assigned at the September meeting, multiple potential science and outreach opportunities over the coming weeks and months, as well as the plan of action for the coming months. Beforehand, however, the new members of the committee in attendance – Andrew Durante, Billy Veczko, and Brandon Neeld – introduced themselves to the others in attendance.

At the September meeting, as outlined in the September meeting report, tasks were delegated to various members of the committee. Clark noted that he had not heard back from any of the K-12 chapter groups that he contacted for more information, while Heather noted that she was nearing completion on a draft letter to send out to teachers around the Tallahassee area about our programs. A few days after the meeting, this letter was completed and distributed for comments and suggestions amongst the committee members. Furthermore, Rachel briefly spoke about the outreach event she went on with Bill Cottrill to Buck Lake Elementary in late September. The week following the meeting, Ashlee followed up with a list of teachers and contact addresses with regards to starting up the K-12 chapter. Other committee members had been assigned with tasks relating to outreach functions which had not been started as of the meeting, but as we move into actually contacting schools and teachers and making presentations, their efforts will be invaluable.

After progress reports, the meeting moved on to a brief discussion of outreach opportunities that had passed Clark’s way over the past couple of weeks. Included in this were an outreach function at Godby High School in Tallahassee on October 12th with Bill, a presentation in Moultrie, GA on tropical meteorology on October 26th with Bill, the chapter’s involvement with a new learning grant program about meteorology for disabled children in Madison, FL over the coming months, and an array of opportunities presented by Irene Klay, a teacher at Fairview Middle whom the chapter gave a classroom presentation for last chapter year. In this latter array of opportunities, a presentation to the participants in the Science Olympiad at Fairview was requested for mid-November as well as in January 2005, judges for the Science Olympiad itself on December 9th were requested, and the idea of presenting to her 6th grade class about the weather in spring 2005 was floated. Interested parties were requested to e-mail Clark or the appropriate contact for more information, while the e-mails containing all of the requisite information were forwarded by Clark to the rest of the committee after the meeting.

At and after the meeting, a plan of action for the coming weeks and months within the committee was developed. A late October meeting, for the purpose of familiarizing ourselves with the outreach programs themselves and the materials we have available to us in support of those programs, was scheduled for October 26th at 7:15pm. An array of baked goods for committee members’ birthdays as well as a dinner entrée will be available, while the meeting itself will be held in the 3rd floor lounge of the Love Building (subject to change). Our normal November meeting (likely early or mid-month) will focus upon hammering out the K-12 chapter idea, while our December meeting will focus upon science fair involvement. Likely tied in to each of these meetings will be progress made on expanding our classroom offerings in terms of contacting teachers and scheduling presentations. Updates on the aforementioned outreach events from the September meeting will be given as events warrant, whether at the actual meetings themselves or via e-mail to committee members.

The meeting was adjourned around 8:15pm to a serving of Key Lime pie.
