August 26, 2004 -- Dr. T.N. Krishnamurti, FSU Dept. of Meteorology President Chris Bennett called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. The following executive members were present: President: Chris Bennett, Vice –President: Geoff Wagner, Treasurer: Cerese Albers, Secretary: Robert Banks, and Past President: Clark Evans. Approximately 55 members were present including the executive board. The meeting began with everyone in the new executive board introducing themselves to the other general members. Plans for the 2004-05 Chapter Year President Chris Bennett announced some of the plans for the upcoming year and for future years to come. The biggest plan for the next few years is the development and implementation of Regional Service Centers (RSC’s) across the Florida Big Bend to unite other potential members interested in our chapter. This would include more involvement in the community and in communities surrounding Tallahassee. Also, Chris mentioned that this year, the chapter will be creating more awards for faculty and students to try and achieve. Treasurer’s Report Treasurer Cerese Albers gave the current financial status of the chapter and encouraged current and new members to pay their annual dues as soon as possible. Another new procedure that was made was a form for new members to fill out and submit along with their dues payment. This simple questionnaire helps the executive board with valuable information about each new member to make us a better chapter. Committees Each member of the executive board announced what committee they chair in order to explain their committee and gather support for it from the general membership. Each of the executive members oversees a different committee but our newest past-president, Clark Evans, oversees one of our most important and most active committees. This is the Science and Education Outreach Committee. Clark got up and explained how he needs a lot of support for this committee in order to get our chapter’s name out to the community. Other General Information Discussed President Chris Bennett informed the membership of the newly revamped chapter website at www.northflams.org and that all information including chapter minutes, etc. is posted to this source for easy viewing by everyone. Also, Chris announced that the local chapter will be trying in the next few months to gather additional support for travel to the Annual AMS Conference in San Diego, CA. He did mention that paying your dues and being a national AMS member will better your chances for Department or AMS travel grants. In conclusion, Chris announced his current Tropical Storm Bonnie chase and mentioned that video will be available soon from his group’s adventures that day. A copy of their chase log is available at www.northflams.org. Guest Speaker President Chris Bennett announced our guest speaker for the meeting. He is Dr. T.N. Krishnamurti, a Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Meteorology at FSU and the creator and director of the FSU Global NWP Superensemble forecasts. Dr. Krishnamurti briefly gave his comments on the forecast errors of Hurricane Charley and then he gave an excellent presentation on his FSU Superensemble and the skills associated with it. The entire membership was very grateful for Dr. Krishnamurti to come and speak and it was a true success. Next Meeting Tentatively set for Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 PM in Room 353 Love Building. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM. The above minutes are a true and correct reflection of the August 26, 2004 meeting. For More Information: Chris Bennett, northflams@gmail.com.
