August 25, 2004 Executive Board Meeting

The officers of the North Florida Chapter of the American Meteorological Society held their August officer’s meeting on August 25, 2004 in the 3rd Floor Lounge of Love Building. The meeting went underway at approximately 6:10pm. Present were President Chris Bennett, Treasurer Cerese Albers, Secretary Robert Banks, and Past-President Clark Evans. Absent was Vice President Geoff Wagner, who had prior commitments. Topics discussed include the website, the August general meeting, and the future of the chapter year.

A summary of the items discussed can be found below:

General Meeting: The agenda for the general meeting was reviewed and approved by the present members of the executive board.

Social functions: With the chair of the Programs committee not being present, not much was talked about with socials except for the idea of a bowling social or FSU Reservation outing in September. Present executive members agreed that the bowling social would be the best choice for next month.

Subcommittees: The executive board discussed a little about each of their subcommittees and what their plans are for the upcoming year. All chairs mentioned need for general membership participation in order to better improve their respective committees. Past-President Clark Evans briefly outlined what he plans to do this semester with his Science and Education Outreach committee.

Finances: Treasurer Cerese Albers will bring the chapter’s books up to date in order to prepare for the upcoming renewal of member dues. Currently, there is approximately $250 in the chapter fund. A new idea that is being used is membership forms that each member will fill out and submit with their dues each year. This not only helps with the bookkeeping, but also will help with allocation and retrieval of funds.

Annual Meeting Funding: For this past AMS Annual Conference in Seattle, the Department of Meteorology and the National AMS made it possible for approximately 20 members of out local chapter to travel to the conference through assistantships and grants. This year, the chapter is aiming to do the same thing and the executive board discussed briefly new ideas of how to obtain funds and choose which members are selected to receive travel funds.

The next general meeting is set for Thursday, August 26, 2004, at 6:30pm in Room 353(Seminar Room). Typically general meetings will be held at 7:30pm but this meeting is going to be longer than normal, so a time of 6:30pm was set.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:00pm with all business for the meeting discussed.
