August 21, 2003 General Meeting

President Clark Evans called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. The following executive members were present: President: Clark Evans, Vice-President: Joe Marzen, Secretary: Robert Banks, and Officer-At-Large Rich Schwerdt. Treasurer Ariel Rodriguez was unable to attend due to being out of town this week. Twenty-seven members were present including the executive board. The meeting began with everyone in the membership introducing themselves to the other members.

Ratification of the Chapter's Constitution

President Evans outlined the Constitution to the chapter, followed by unanimous ratification by the chapter with a yay-nay vote.

Chapter Finances

In place of the absent Treasurer, President Clark Evans noted that after refreshments for the meeting, the chapter had $202.00 in funds on-hand. We also noted that dues - $5/students, $10/non-students - should be paid at any point before the October monthly meeting and can be paid directly to any of the chapter officers at or after the meeting.

AMS Annual Conference

Later, we called upon the membership to get a consensus of who would have an interest of attending the AMS Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington on January 11th - 15th of 2004. About nine members raised their hands showing a good interest in attending the meeting. We discussed with the membership about applying for student travel grants through the National AMS and about possibly securing some funding through the Florida State University (FSU) Department of Meteorology for non-student chapter members to attend the conference.

National AMS Membership

Additionally, we discussed the benefits of joining the national AMS to the local chapter membership. The cost is $15 for students and $75 for non-students and included with membership is a subscription to BAMS (Bulletin of the AMS) for one year. A half-year student membership is only $7.50 and a good consensus appeared that they would join if they were not members already. We also noted that in order to be a local chapter President you must be a national member of the AMS.

Social Events

The local chapter announced three social events that we plan on holding this fall. They are a bowling social in the winter, a Thanksgiving dinner social, and a barbecue at the Seminole Reservation in early fall. Further social events will be organized upon the wishes of the membership.

Forecasting Contest

Also, we discussed the Department of Meteorology’s local forecast contest held for 14 weeks each semester and announced that our chapter will award plaques to the top three finishers in the contest in the spring and fall semesters. Information on joining will be available from Mr. Bill Cottrill after the start of classes August 25th.

Football Block Seating

The chapter announced the idea of chapter block seating for FSU home football games and there was a good consensus to do so. It only takes eleven people to start a block and blocks have much better chances in getting tickets to popular games, such as the forthcoming contest versus the University of Miami. Also, this will promote more social activities amongst members. However, no one in the general membership has volunteered to be the block chair at this time.

Outreach Projects

We also discussed the chapter’s potential involvement in school science fairs and outreach to the community in general. The chapter is going to try to promote meteorology and foster an interest in sciences among younger people in the area this year. President Evans later called upon chapter member and Science & Education subcommittee head Chris Bennett to speak. Chris is a senior in the Department of Meteorology and is a volunteer at the Challenger Learning Center in downtown Tallahassee. He spoke about the various activities at the Center and how we could get involved in helping out in developing programs at the Center, as well as other potential outreach opportunities in the community involving the American Red Cross and local television stations, among other groups.

Subcommittees

Finally, we briefly discussed the four subcommittees we have as a local chapter - Program, Membership, Publicity, and Science & Education - and asked the membership to begin thinking about which subcommittee they would like to help with this fall.

Next Meeting

Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 PM in Room 353 of the Love Building, on the campus of the Florida State University.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM.
