January 13, 2003 Executive Board Meeting

The North Florida Local Chapter of the AMS held it’s first officer’s meeting of the new calendar year on Monday, January 13, 2003, at 2:30pm in the map room (Room 501) of the Love Building on the campus of the Florida State University. All officers were present at the meeting.

President Stephanie Abrams opened the meeting with a discussion of subcommittees. It was requested that the Secretary e-mail all chapter members asking for a roll call of members who wished to assist in a particular subcommittee. Interested members are to e-mail the head of the respective subcommittee (Social - President Stephanie Abrams; Speaker/Membership - Vice-President Jeff Wood; Newsletter - Secretary Clark Evans; and Science/Education - Treasurer Joe Smith) to indicate their interest as soon as possible. Subcommittees are to meet as soon as possible to formulate ideas for the upcoming year.

It was also suggested by President Abrams that the chapter hold a Valentine’s Day social get-together. It was decided that the best time for such an event would be the weekend of February 8th and 9th, though activities, a location, and a specific date and time have yet to be determined. The Social Committee will discuss those factors and more at their first meeting and particulars will hopefully be announced at the next chapter meeting.

Immediately thereafter, the next chapter meeting was set for Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at 7:00pm in Room 353 of the Love Building on the campus of Florida State University. Secretary Clark Evans will e-mail all members of the chapter and all meteorology department staff, students, and personnel with an open invitation to join the local chapter and come to the meeting on the 29th. Information regarding the time, date, and location of the next chapter meeting will be disseminated to chapter members before the end of the week of January 13th.

Up next on the agenda was obtaining a speaker for the meeting. The predominant choice for a speaker at the next chapter meeting, pending acceptance, was to have a member of the NWS forecast office in Tallahassee, co-located with the Meteorology Department at Florida State, speak at the meeting in sort of an informal question-and-answer period. The hope is that such a question-and-answer period would be followed by a tour of the 4th floor of the new wing of the Love Building (the NWS offices), though that has yet to be arranged at this time. Vice-President Jeff Wood will contact the head of the NWS-TLH forecast office, Paul Duval, within the next week in order to try to arrange for a speaker on the 29th.

Other items to note from the officer’s meeting included: the chapter webpage has currently not been updated since November due to problems with the webserver at www.met.fsu.edu, though Secretary Clark Evans hopes to be able to access and edit the webpage within the next two weeks; no t-shirt designs have been submitted for the chapter t-shirt and, at this time, it looks likely that a generic design will be used for any chapter t-shirts unless a design is submitted from a member of the chapter; President Stephanie Abrams hopes to have the chapter constitution completed and ready for submission to AMS headquarters in the near future; and, finally, Treasurer Joe Smith hopes to have a chapter bank account set up by the end of the current week, though procedures in regards to obtaining such an account have changed slightly since the topic was last discussed.

With the next meeting date set and orders in place to be working with subcommittees and establishing an agenda for the chapter meeting on January 29th, President Stephanie Abrams adjourned the officer’s meeting slightly after 3:00pm.
