Message Subject: COMET Update

Greetings!

Since the summer update from COMET sent last August, we have published many more new training materials! Topics covered include satellite interpretation, fire weather, ocean currents, tropical meteorology, and more. Read on for additional details and direct web links.

The first chapter in the new Online Tropical Meteorology Textbook!

Introduction to Tropical Meteorology, Chapter 3: Tropical Remote Sensing Applications
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/tropical/textbook/

3 new modules on fire weather (and satellite) meteorology

The Structure of the NWS Fire Weather Program
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/fire/s591/struc/

Fire Weather Grid Techniques:
Relative Humidity and Dewpoint Temperature
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/fire/s591/grids/rh_td/

Multispectral Satellite Applications:
Monitoring the Wildland Fire Cycle
http://meted.ucar.edu/npoess/multispectral_topics/fire_wx/index.htm
This third one may be of particular interest to you if you are in an area that is susceptible to, or has recently been affected by, wildfires.

A new module in the Dynamic Feature Identification series on satellite interpretation

Dynamic Feature Identification: Deformation Zone Diagnosis
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/norlat/sat_features/dz_diagnosis/

And 3 other exciting new modules of possible interest

Frontogenetical Circulations and Stability
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/norlat/frontal_stability/
This Webcast by Dr. Jim Moore was produced posthumously and provides a technical, but excellent explanation of these important topics.

Real-Time Mesoscale Analysis (RTMA): What is the NCEP RTMA and how can it be used?
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/nwp/RTMA/
Heard of it, wonder what it is? This presentation by Dr. Stephen Jascourt will fill you in.

Introduction to Ocean Currents
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/oceans/currents/
And for anyone living along an oceanic coastline, this may be of great interest.

Additionally, 15 new French and Spanish translations of previously published titles are also available.

As always, these materials are freely available to everyone, courtesy of our sponsors (NOAA's NWS, NESDIS GOES and NPOESS programs, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, the Air Force Weather Agency, and the Meteorological Service of Canada), as well as special funding from Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, EUMETSAT, the National Science Foundation, and NOAA's International Affairs office.

Don't forget you'll need to register in order to access the modules, but registration is free, easy and available in both English and Spanish. We welcome any comments, suggestions, or feedback you have on these or any other training offerings available through the MetEd Website.

Sincerely,

Wendy Schreiber-Abshire
