Purpose of the Annual Summer Community Meetings
The American Meteorological Society, its Commission on the Weather and Climate
Enterprise, and its Board on Enterprise Communication are proud to work with AMS
Community members from all sectors (public, private, and academic), on a
continuing basis, to advance the ability of the weather, water, and climate
Community to meet our nation's, and the world's demand for products and
services relating to weather, water, climate, and other closely allied fields.
An important tool to help accomplish this objective is the AMS Summer Community
Meeting.
Held each August, at a location that is home to a concentration of Community
members, the AMS Summer Community Meeting provides a venue for discussing
timely topics of broad Community interest.
Theme of the 2010 Summer Community Meeting
Weather and Climate Risk: Signs, Uncertainty, and Outcome
One of the biggest challenges faced by our Community is utilizing the vast amount
of data and information we have accumulated to assist in making the most difficult
decisions businesses and society face in some of the most critical situations.
At stake are hundreds of billions of dollars and the safety of countless lives.
Are we, as a Community, prepared to effectively rise to the challenges? We take a
look at:
- the sectors of society to see where the needs are now and get some opinions
of where they will be heading in the future
- the data, model, and display capabilities we have, how they can be used, and
what is still needed
- some examples of how we have already taken on the need to craft decision-making
tools and products and whether their development processes can be replicated to
address the increasing risk posed by climate and weather over time scales ranging
from minutes to decades.
This meeting provides insight toward the next steps of coordinated, effective
action across all members of our Community to address weather and climate risk.
