Private Sector Mentorship Program

The AMS Board for Private Sector Meteorologists has designed this mentorship program to create and foster one-on-one personal interactions between mentors employed in the private sector and students interested in working in the private sector tailored to the needs of each individual to enhance their understanding of opportunities and professional growth potential in the private sector of the weather and climate professional enterprise.

Goals of the Program

  • To establish mentorship relationships between advanced undergraduate and graduate meteorology and atmospheric science students and professionals in private industry.
  • To facilitate mutual learning and growth through the collection and exchange of information and advice on professional career development.
  • To sustain organic growth of the professional network of mentors and students.

Mentoring Program Testimonials

My experience with the Private Sector Mentorship program was greatly beneficial.  The 'private sector' itself can seem like a really gray area, and it's difficult as a student to get a good breadth of information about it.  In addition to having a wonderful personal contact, this program put me directly in touch with several individuals in many arenas of the private sector - it's no longer a large blur to me, but a world of possibilities for applying my science.
Kim Klockow, University of Oklahoma

My mentor was a great wealth of information.  We would remain in contact on a regular basis to talk about my progress in school as well as intern opportunities that were suitable for my interests.  She helped in obtaining a great internship for me; this experience will take me very far in my career, but most importantly, my mentor has always been so encouraging and supportive of my progress towards my final career.
Marcia Hsu, University of Georgia
