Page charges defray publications charges incurred by AMS for technical editing, composition, printing, and hosting of journal content. Color charges are additional.
While all authors are expected to ensure that page charges are honored, the AMS has always published accepted manuscripts whether or not page charges are honored, and will continue to do so. However, some authors with the apparent ability to pay the charges have not done so in the past, and this penalizes the other authors who in effect subsidize the ones who choose not to pay. Furthermore, the total amount of unpaid charges, totaling several hundred-thousand dollars annually, significantly affects the Society’s budget. Thus the AMS Council has recently requested that anticipated page charges be accounted for at the beginning of the publication process, before papers enter the peer-review process.
For authors who indicate that publications charges will be fully covered, your manuscript will immediately enter the qualification process leading to peer review.
Authors who cannot indicate that page charges will be paid must request a waiver of page charges before the manuscript is forwarded for qualification and peer review. Instructions for requesting a waiver are provided at the end of the manuscript submission process. Examples of those receiving waivers include authors of unfunded research who do not belong to an institution that is normally expected to cover the charges by their employees and/or those from developing nations. Authors of papers for which page charges are not honored may experience delays in publication. Please note that for unfunded papers, color figures must be converted to black and white figures before peer review (except for BAMS submissions).
Please Note: Page-charge waivers should not be considered as an all-or-nothing option. For those authors who legitimately cannot afford to pay full page charges but do have access to some funding, partial waivers are available.
