Application Information for Students and Faculty at Minority Serving Institutions
Participation will be limited to no more than 50 participants; 38 paying participants, 10 funded students, and 2 faculty members at minority serving institutions participants.
Student and faculty members at minority serving institutions applicants competing for support must submit (1) a cover letter , (2) a letter of intent , (3) a curriculum vitae , (4) two letters of reference , and (5) register online. To be eligible, students should be U.S. Citizens and AMS (student) members, or applicants.

The cover letter should include:
- name and address
- phone number and e-mail address
- names of references
- citizenship status
- AMS membership status
- degree status (undergraduate applicants should be completing their junior year at a minimum)
The letter of intent (no more than one page) should summarize:
- why participation is desired
- the candidate's qualifications (a mix of both scientific training and policy experience and interest)
The curriculum vitae should be no more than two pages of personal and professional data.
Applicants must request letters of reference from two people who can address professional competence and other qualities that demonstrates the applicant's potential and aptitude for policy as well as scientific matters. The applicant is responsible for contacting the references and providing them with the reference letter guidance listed below. Letters of reference are considered confidential and must be mailed directly to the person and address listed above. These letters must describe the:
- reference's relationship to applicant and ability to evaluate his/her qualifications
- scientific and technical accomplishments and competency of the applicant and the relative standing of the applicant among his/her peers
- applicant's ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, and potential for contributing to the policy arena in future years
- (if the applicant is an undergraduate) those unusual attributes that make his/her participation appropriate at such an early career stage
Selection process and schedule. All student and faculty members at minority serving institutions application materials are due February 1, 2010. Selections will be made no later than March 1, 2010.
