The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Minority Scholarships help support the college educations of minority students traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students, who intend to pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences.
Stipend
The two-year scholarships, funded by industry and through donations made by members to the AMS 21st Century Campaign, are for $3000 for a nine-month period in the freshman year and an additional $3000 for a nine-month period in the sophomore year. Second year funding depends on successful completion of the first academic year.
Eligibility
Minority students who will be entering their freshman year of college in fall 2008 are eligible to apply. The applications, including all supporting materials, must be postmarked by89 February 2008. The announcement of winners is expected to be made in early May 2008. (The AMS does not prepare written evaluations of either successful or unsuccessful candidates.)
Application Procedures
Local chapters of the AMS have agreed to serve as points of collection and initial screening for all applications. Send your complete application package to the local chapter listed on the application form that is closest to you. Send a photocopy of this form, transcripts, and your essay to:

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all materials are received at AMS Headquarters by the closing date; applicants are encouraged to check with AMS in early March regarding the status of their application package.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status and must be pursuing a degree at a U.S. institution.
