Giant Leap Intern Program
Intern Project Description

PROJECT:  Spatial and temporal correlation of lightning with failures in wind turbines

Giant Leap is Vaisala's internship program for 3+ year students enrolled in a University.  We will have 4 paid positions available in our Boulder, Colorado office.  As a Giant Leap intern, you will work either individually, in a team or with experienced Vaisala employees on real-life projects that have genuine business relevance.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT:

The intern would analyze wind turbine manufacturer’s failure records and compare these records with Vaisala’s lightning records to develop an understanding of the spatial and temporal correlation of lightning with failures in wind turbines and supporting infrastructures.  Various statistical analysis and GIS-based analysis would be conducted.

RESPONSIBILITIES (What the position entails)

This would be done by first interacting with wind turbine operators and manufacturers to obtain their failure information.  Once this data is received it will need to be understood and dissected and  tools designed to prepare the data for integration with our analysis tools.  Finally our analysis tools and other available analysis tools will be used to determine the level of interaction between lightning and wind turbines. The proposed outcome of the project would be:

  1. To establish a performance baseline for our newly capable lightning detection network in North America
  2. By partnering with targeted turbine operations companies, give Vaisala exposure in this industry.
  3. Identify how lightning data can be analyzed and results provide  value to this industry.
  4. Vaisala will develop expertise in this area and extend the value of an existing Vaisala dataset and detection capability.

REQUIRED SKILLS OF THE INTERN:

The intern will need to be a self-starter who is comfortable interacting with guidance with  turbine manufacturers, large datasets and data analysis tools.  The individual may be interested in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), data mining techniques, statistical analysis and meteorological phenomenon.

PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND OF THE INTERN:
Possible educational backgrounds would be:  Atmospheric Science Student (Senior or Masters level) with strong data analysis or Electrical Engineering (Senior)
