December 10th, 2013 Meeting Minutes
The Ark-La-Tex Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) held its 6th meeting and final meeting of 2013 on Tuesday, December 10th at Copeland’s New Orleans restaurant in Shreveport, LA. This meeting began at 6:30 pm, with sixteen members present.
This meeting was to celebrate the end of the final year with food, cheers and, as always, talks about weather. More importantly, though, was the discussion about our future AMS meeting topics. We talked about doing similar meetings as we did last year as well as possibly trying something new.
One topic in particular was to involve more case studies of weather phenomena. The goal is to bring weather enthusiasts, as well as, Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB) forecasters from the 26 Operational Weather Squadron (OWS) with the AMS meetings. With operational weather being their key focus, airmen who forecast for the Ark-La-Tex area would find it interesting to discuss how the local terrain affects the areas. These case studies would assist them with their reasoning for their forecasts and keep them meteorologically savvy.
As for events that we would like to repeat, visiting Barksdale AFB 26OWS and 2OSS weather flight would be on the top to do. This will enable our community members to see how the Air Force works with weather on a day to day basis. A fun meeting that not only includes weather education, but sometimes a tour of the B-52 bombers at the base.
We also collected food items for local charities to be donated Providence House and the Shreveport Bossier Rescue Mission. Even with the talk of work at the final event, everyone stayed merry with holiday cheer, had a great evening, and at some cheesecake as we closed the 2013 year.
The following members were present:
Jason Hansford Bryan Walter Alex Sigler
Leslie Sexton Lee Sexton Ken Falk
Matt Hemmingway Jessica Hemmingway Mario Valverde
Linda Valverde Rhonda Lee Patrick Omundson
John Mussey Ann Mussey Billy Andrews
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.---Alex Sigler.
