SOUTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA

As a way to welcome students back, a carnival was put together by university officials on August 31, 2006. The Southwest PA Chapter took part in this fun event by creating an informational weather booth which featured information on the chapter, merchandise, and interactive weather discussions. All of this was presented to students interested in meteorology.

Our chapter has begun creating monthly climate summaries of the local region, posting each to our website. Many students have chosen to take part in this optional project. Each month’s data are collected by our local network, and chapter members collect, analyze, and compose a summary each month. Archives are posted on the website for future use.

As part of the operational forecasting laboratory at California University of Pennsylvania, students are entitled to sign up for forecast shifts. These forecast shifts give students the ability to improve forecasting skills, work together in groups, and write meteorological discussions based upon national and local weather. Each day includes three (3) forecasting times with upperclassmen leading the atmospheric dissection. Skills learned here may be utilized by students in the “Weather Challenge” national competition.---Michael J. Allen.
