Before the meeting officially began, Kathleen Dougherty (kedougherty@ou.edu) and Jaclyn Williams handed out tickets to the School of Meteorology picnic to each student as they walked in. Christine Brown began the meeting by making announcements about the switch of meeting speakers in September. The exchange students will speak on September 13, and the panel of grad students will speak on September 27. The change of location of the October 19 meeting, signups for the hiking and camping trip on September 24, signups for tickets to the December 1 OKC Philharmonic concert were also announced, and Christine stated that if any particular class had difficult tests planned close to any SCAMS event, the events could be rearranged if necessary. Dr. Carr (fcarr@ou.edu) then gave a welcome speech to all of the new members, and Christine introduced the new officers. Next the officer elections for junior, sophomore, freshman, and graduate representatives were held (due to low voter turnout at the final meeting last year before finals). Only three people ran for freshman representative: Jessica Pierson, Emmale Davis, and Vivek Mahale. They won the election by default. Three people ran for sophomore representative: Melissa Koeka, who had 11 votes; Pat Hyland, who had 10 votes; and Chris Vagasley, who had 2 votes. Only one person ran for junior representative, so Kari Austin won by default. Two people ran for graduate representative: Somer Erickson, who had 10 votes; and Tim Wiegman, who had 2 votes. While the votes were counted by Melissa Moon and Jaclyn Williams, who were totally unbiased and in no way affected by the election results, Megan Ferris announced the elections for the meteorology part of the Student Affairs Committee and explained how to run for a position. The election is September 7. The deadline to apply for office is September 5. Dr. Laufersweiler (laufers@ou.edu) was the main speaker. He discussed Rossby and the hacking over the summer. He briefly talked about password safety, the new rules about alumni accounts, updates to the SOM servers, podcasting the OWL forecast, and changes to SOM computing in general. After the speaker, several general announcements were made. Kathleen Dougherty talked about the Monday Memo, SEES, and the Redhawks game this Saturday. Carrie Rose (rose@ou.edu) talked about the mentoring program and how to join. Kiel Ortega (kortega@rossby.metr.ou.edu) talked about the tutoring program and the meteorology help desk. Danny Cherisnick (dcherisn@rossby.metr.ou.edu) talked about inviting the club to horse racing in Oklahoma City on September 16. Tim Wiegman (twiegman@ou.edu) talked about ham radio classes and how to get involved. Finally Jaclyn Williams announced the election results, and Christine made final comments about upcoming events and the next meeting which will be held on September 13. The meeting was dismissed at 5:50 pm, and pizza was served.---Christy Wall.
