NEW YORK CITY/LONG ISLAND

On Saturday, August 8, 2004 the NYC/LI Chapter of the AMS attended the National Weather Service (NWS) Open House at Brookhaven National Lab in Upton NY. Prior to the NWS opening its office to the public, Jeffery Tongue of the NWS gave a demonstration of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) capabilities to the NYC/LI Chapter of the AMS.

At the NWS Open House, the public was provided with a 30-minute tour of the NWS facility, a presentation about hurricanes, demonstrations on instrumentation, and provided free educational publications from a wide range of areas, including teaching initiatives, meteorological terms, and safety procedures in situations of hazardous weather. As part of the NWS office tour, the NYC/LI Chapter of the AMS set up a booth manned by NYC/LI Chapter members. Members provided the public with informative handouts about weather and answered questions concerning college opportunities and the weather.

The activities of the day concluded with a weather balloon launch that was observed by both the chapter members and the public.---CarrieAnn Paukowits and Michael Schaffer.

OKLAHOMA UNIVERSITY

Tuesday August 31st, 2004

Aaron began the meeting with a welcome to everyone. The current officers were introduced, each giving a short speech about where they are from and their level in schooling. Dr. Carr was there to make a few comments of welcome and hopes for everyone to participate. He also announced the School of Meteorology Welcome Back picnic that is on September 10th at Lions Park from 5-10 pm and that he hopes to see everyone there. The minutes and treasurer's report were skipped for this meeting seeing as they were from last semester. However they will be read at each subsequent meeting. The first elections were for graduate representative and there were two candidates, Somer and Ashton. They each gave a brief speech and ballots were passed out to the present graduate students so that they could vote. Then, due to Cyrena Marie-Briede, the current president, transferring, there was a vote to be taken place for president. There were two candidates, Aaron Kennedy and Tim Weigman. They each said why they would be good at the position. Ballots were passed out to everyone except freshmen because they are not formally supposed to vote on the president until the end of their first year. The ballots for both president and graduate representative were collected and taken to be counted by Jake Stacken, Michael Pieleck, and Jaclyn Williams. The results from those two elections have Aaron Kennedy as president and Somer Erickson as graduate representative. The last elections that needed to take place were for freshmen representative. There are three positions available and the three people with the most votes get the positions. Each freshman is allowed to vote for one person and only freshmen are allowed to vote. There were seven people trying out for freshmen representative and each had to talk about themselves for approximately a minute. The ballots were taken and counted by the same people. The three new freshmen representatives are Sam Sagnella, Sara Johnson, and Jennifer Garcia. Once the elections were completed, Aaron discussed how that once you are a member of SCAMS, you are also a member of COCAMS. There is the opportunity to join the AMS at the student rate of $15 a year and receive the BAMS (Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society). Student members of the AMS have the chance to go the national meeting. There are survey forms that were handed out at this SCAMS meeting in order to gauge interest in certain activities and ideas for speakers. Those are to be filled out and handed in at the end of the meeting. Next meeting the rules for the photo/video contest will be announced, as will the categories. The winners of this year's contest will have their pictures framed and placed in the School of Meteorology main office. Kiel Ortega got up to speak on behalf of the SAC, or Student Affairs Committee. They will be having elections in two weeks and it is a self-nomination process. Emails for nominations can be sent to sac@rossby.metr.ou.edu. The SAC is mainly a body that helps communicate between faculty and students. James Hocker made an announcement for SOM hockey. It meets every Thursday at 7 pm at the Norman Recreation Center tennis courts. Anyone is welcome to come and he can be contacted by email at jhocker@ou.edu. Aaron invited everyone to come play basketball every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7 pm at Irving Middle School. There are new bumper stickers for sale, which are the product of a lot of hard work by Aaron. There are round ones for $2 and rectangle ones for $3. There was one more announcement for the SOM picnic that is Friday September 10th from 5-10 pm and a reminder that you must have a ticket to get in but the tickets are free. Tickets can be gotten from any meteorology office and were available at the meeting. There will be door prizes! The meeting was adjourned at 6:19 pm.---Aaron Kennedy.
