Guidelines for
use of the AMS Name, Seal, and Logos
The American Meteorological
Society (AMS) is a non-profit, professional society whose objectives are the
development and dissemination of knowledge of the atmospheric and related
oceanic and hydrologic sciences, and the advancement of its professional
applications.
In order to ensure that rights and
privileges of all members, as well as the Society as a whole are upheld, the
AMS has developed the following guidelines for the proper use of the AMS name,
its Seal of Approval, the designation Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM)
or Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), and the official seal of the AMS:
- In
accordance with Article XII, Section 3(F) of the AMS Constitution, members
shall not use or display the official seal of the AMS, the Seal of
Approval, or the designations Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) or
Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) unless duly authorized by the
Society.
- When an
individual has been granted the Seal of Approval for either Radio or
Television Weathercasting, the Seal should be used in such a way that no
implication of endorsement of a sponsor, or a sponsor's product may be
interpreted by the audience. In addition, note that the Seal is awarded to
an individual, and not to a station or program. Therefore, visual or aural
announcements should reflect this (e.g., "Channel X Meteorologist
[Name] has been granted the Seal of Approval by the American
Meteorological Society"). In order to ensure a clear distinction between the Seal and CBM logos, the Seal of Approval logo may not be displayed with the colors gold/yellow and black. Sealholders may not refer to themselves as
"certified by the AMS" because that designation is reserved for
individuals with the CBM or CCM certification. Sealholders should instead
say that they have been awarded the AMS Seal of Approval.
- When an
individual has been granted Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM)
status, the designation should be used in such a way that no implication
of endorsement of a sponsor, or a sponsor's product may be interpreted by
the audience. In addition, note that the CBM designation is awarded to an
individual, and not to a station or program. Therefore, visual or aural
announcements should reflect this (e.g., "Channel X Meteorologist
[Name] has been designated a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the
American Meteorological Society"). The CBM logo should be displayed
as gold lettering on a black background.
- When an
individual has been granted Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM)
status, the notation should be used in such a way that no implication of
endorsement of any commercial venture may be interpreted. In addition,
note that the CCM designation is granted to an individual, not a company
or other organization. Therefore, publication or other use should reflect
this (e.g., "Jane Doe, CCM has been designated a Certified Consulting
Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society").
