AMS Statements in Process

Statements Accepting Comments
AMS Statements that are being considered by the AMS Council for approval are posted on the AMS Web site at least at least thirty days before the Council vote. The Council may consider a statement either at one of the two regularly scheduled meetings each year, or at any time in between using e-mail discussion and electronic balloting. In addition, statement preparation does not follow a fixed schedule so statements may come up for consideration at any time of the year. AMS Members who are interested in providing input to statements are encouraged to check the AMS Web site regularly to see if any are under review at that time.

Précis for revising the AMS Statement on Free and Open Exchange of Environmental Data
Rapid advances in computing, communications, and observational technologies in the last decade have resulted in a dramatic proliferation of data from diverse sources, data that are consumed and by an ever broadening community of users and shared across the world for diverse applications. As a result of the changing information technology landscape, there has been a revolution in data services world, including changes in how data are accessed, analyzed, managed, shared, and archived. The 2002 AMS Statement on Free and Open Exchange of Environmental Data does not reflect those advances and clearly needs updating. For example, concepts such as data transparency, re-use, provenance, stewardship, preservation, citation, standards and conventions are not mentioned. For these and other reasons, the AMS Board on Data Stewardship agreed unanimously at its meeting at the AMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans that the aforementioned Statement needs a major revision and updating.

Free and Open Exchange of Environmental Data
