14th Conference on Mountain Meteorology Student Prizes and Travel Assistance Information

Awards for Best Poster and Oral Presentations:
Award certificates and cash prizes will be given for the best student oral and poster presentations at the conference. The first-place winners in each of these categories will receive $150. The second-place winners will receive $75.

Travel funding assistance for students:
Several funding sources are available for students who need financial assistance to attend the AMS 14th Conference on Mountain Meteorology.

1. Conference Organizers Travel Awards: The Mountain Meteorology Committee is offering a limited amount of support, $350, for each of three (3) student AMS members who are presenting papers at the conference. The support will be available to three students from different educational institutions. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. This money is to be used for travel to/from the conference, and/or for lodging. The students selected will be required to pay for any travel up-front, and be reimbursed by AMS (Brenda Ward, bward@ametsoc.org) after the conference with proper receipts. Students who apply should provide a brief written statement declaring their need and circumstances, as well as how their study focus relates to the conference topics. The student should not be receiving any other funding support (e.g., an AMS Travel Grant). Applications (email is acceptable) will be accepted up through 23 April 2010, and selected students will be notified around the end of May 2010. Students interested please contact conference program Co-Chairs, Dr. Dave Whiteman (dave.whiteman@utah.edu) or Dr. John Horel (john.horel@utah.edu). The awardees are expected to submit a short report (1-2 pages) to the Program Co-Chairs within 2 months after the conference describing how attendance at the conference contributed to the student's program of study.

2. AMS Student Travel Grants: http://www.ametsoc.org/amsstudentinfo/stg_info.html, air/hotel/registration fee awards for student AMS members not presenting at the conference, applications due 23 April 2010, with notification around the end of May 2010.

3. AMS Student Assistant Program: Volunteer students are needed for registration and audio/visual support during the conference. Requirements are that they are to be in attendance the entire conference, and be available to work 1/2 day each day Sunday through Friday. The students will have to work either the first or second shift (i.e., morning or afternoon). For volunteering, the student will get their registration fee waived and $25.00 a day for food allowance. This is based on a first come, first serve basis. A limited number of students will be needed for the conference. Those students interested please contact Ms. Brenda Ward, at bward@ametsoc.org.

4. European Meteorological Society Young Scientist Travel Award (application, PDF), one award for a young scientist working or studying in Europe, 500 Euros, applications due on 30 Apr 2010.

Students are also advised to search for funds from their academic advisors and from their departments, colleges and universities.
