2014 AMS Summer Community Meeting: Improving Forecasts and the Communication of Forecasts

11-13 August  2014, State College, PA, Nittany Lion Inn

This year’s AMS Summer Community Meeting will strengthen the relationships within the public, private, and academic sectors to work together towards more effective weather decision-support, particularly for the zero to ten day forecast range.  The overarching goal is to improve products that end users use to support vital decisions.

Organizers

The 2014 AMS Summer Community Meeting is organized by the AMS Commission on the Weather and Climate Enterprise and sponsored by the American Meteorological Society.  The conference will be held at The Nittany Lion Inn, 11-13 August, 2014.

All attendees must register to attend the conference. Pre-registration (discounted) rates will be available until Fri. 18 July.

There are three ways to register for the AMS 2014 Summer Community Meeting:

1) On-line Registration: *Recommended Method*

2) On-Site Registration. The AMS 2014 Summer Community Meeting registration desk will be open for registration starting at 10:00 am on Monday and will remain open throughout the meeting.

3) Fax-in Registration form. (Available until 31 July only.)

FULL MEETING PACKAGE includes: Your badge (must be worn at all times in the meeting room), a program, and for each of three days: admission to the meeting, Monday evening's reception, a light breakfast (Tues & Wed.), a lunch, two refreshment breaks and 1 ticket to the Tuesday evening dinner.

ONE-DAY PACKAGE includes: Your badge (must be worn at all times in the meeting room), a program, and for any one calendar day: admission to the meeting, and all social and meal events for that day with the exception of the Tuesday evening dinner. (Tickets may be purchased separately for the dinner for $35.)

REGISTRATION WILL NOT BE PROCESSED WITHOUT PAYMENT. Payment may be made with check, money order, purchase order, or credit card (MasterCard/VISA/American Express). Checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank and payable in U.S. dollars. Refunds (less a $25 processing fee) will be granted only for cancellations received in wiring by Monday, 4 August.

 

Accommodations

Nittany Lion InnAttendees are responsible for making their own hotel arrangements. All meeting sessions for the conferences will be held at the Nittany Lion Inn: 200 W. Park Ave., State College, PA.

A block of rooms have been reserved at the hotel for meeting attendees at a special rate of $119 (plus taxes) for reservations made by Wed. 9 July.

To receive the special meeting rate, attendees must request a room under the AMS block.

Thank you in advance for booking your sleeping room at the meeting host hotel. In doing so, you’re helping AMS maintain a strong pick-up history for future hotel contract negotiations, helping to keep registration rates as low as possible.

The room block at the Nittany Lion is full. There are several hotels within a 1 mile Radius of the conference hotel. Please see the list below. Rates are subject to change since AMS does not have a negotiated room black.*

In addition to a morning and an afternoon coffee break with snacks/fruit each day, the following meals and social events are included in each full meeting registration package:

Monday, 11 August

  • Lunch sponsored by the Penn State Meteorology Department (6th Floor, Walker building). Meet us there or in the Nittany Lion Inn lobby 15 min. before lunch and we’ll walk (or drive if you need!) you on over. (~7 min. walk)
  • BBQ Dinner Reception sponsored by AccuWeather and held off-site. Transportation will be provided.

Dinner Event
The Summer Community Meeting Dinner will be held on Tuesday evening at the Nittany Lion Inn. One ticket is included in each full meeting registration package. Tickets for one-day registration package-holders and/or guests may be purchased for $35 in advance or on-site, space-permitting.

Special Dietary Needs
Menus will be planned for a variety of food at each break and meal to accommodate attendees (vegetarian/healthy/daily chocolate fix needs etc.). If you have specific requirements, please contact Cara Campbell by Fri. 18 July so that we can confirm arrangements for you.

Internet Accessibility
Complimentary high speed internet access is available in all sleeping rooms, meeting space and lobby areas at the Nittany Lion Inn.

The Nittany Lion Inn is located at 200 W. Park Ave., State College, PA. Flights come in daily from Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Washington/Dulles Airports.

Ground Transportation

The Nittany Lion Inn provides a complimentary shuttle to/from the airport with advance arrangement and around the campus area when available. Please call the Inn directly to arrange your transportation needs in advance.

The Nittany Lion Inn is also within walking distance to many restaurants and areas of interest. However, if you opt to bring your car, garage or surface parking is complimentary for our meeting attendees.
