JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHY

Published monthly by the American Meteorological Society, the Journal of Physical Oceanography covers research related to the physics of the ocean and to processes operating at its boundaries. Observational, theoretical, and modeling studies are all welcome, especially those that focus on elucidating specific physical processes. Papers that investigate interactions with other components of the earth system (e.g., ocean–atmosphere, physical–biological and physical–chemical interactions) as well as studies of other fluid systems (e.g., lakes and laboratory tanks) are also invited, as long as their focus is on understanding the ocean or the ocean's role in the earth system.

The links provide detailed information for readers, authors, reviewers, and those who wish to submit a manuscript for consideration.

The Journal of Physical Oceanography prints three types of pieces. These are

• Articles -Full-length, up to 7500 words or 26 double-spaced pages of text (not including references, figure and table lists, and figures).
  
  
• Notes -Shorter articles, usually confined to a single subject. These are treated exactly the same as articles in the method of review and citation.
  
  
• Comments and Reply Exchanges - Comments are written in response to a published article. The author of the article being commented upon always has the opportunity to write a reply. These exchanges are published together.
  
  

Important note to authors who choose to submit hard copies rather than use the electronic upload system. For JPO only, unless specifically requested, please submit three (not five) copies of your manuscript—including complete text, figure captions, tables, and references—as well as the copyright agreement signed by all authors of the manuscript (original signatures only, not faxed or photocopied). For more details, please refer to the AMS Authors' Guide.

Manuscripts on all topics in physical oceanography may be submitted to any editor, but their review will be facilitated if they are directed to the appropriate subject-specific editor as in the following list. Specify the appropriate editor in the pulldown menu.

• For coastal oceanography and mesoscale processes and interdisciplinary submissions that involve marine biology and geochemistry, submit to Dr. Jack Barth
  
• For low-and high-latitude oceanography and currents, submit to Dr. Eric Firing.
  
• For intermediate and small-scale oceanography, submit to Dr. Peter Müller.
  
• For surface waves, air-sea interaction and surface mixed layers, submit to Dr. Jerome Smith.
  
• For large- and mesoscale theory and numerical modeling, submit to Dr. Michael Spall.
  
• For midlatitude oceanography and water masses, submit to Dr. Lynne Talley.
