COMMUNICATIONS WORKSHOP Exclusive sponsorship $7,500 This workshop seeks to address the current difficult financial situation in the atmospheric sciences. Funding
support for the atmospheric sciences is tight–in part because of budget conditions and the redirection of
resources to homeland security and the war effort in Iraq. The budget crunch has made it difficult to tell great
atmospheric science stories. Nearly every newspaper in the country has an astrology column. Very few have
a weekly science column. Why? Because scientists and journalists do not always speak the same language,
and the editors choose which stories will be published. The two groups do not have a great deal of confi-
dence in one another.
Are you interested in changing the dynamics between these two groups? This is an opportunity to have an
impact by sponsoring this workshop. The workshop is part of an ongoing effort by the AMS to strengthen the
relationship between the atmospheric science community and the media. Your sponsorship monies will be
used to develop collateral and promotional materials and some of the logistics support costs. The AMS does
not charge for participation in this workshop.
