The Fifth Presidential ForumWednesday, 12 January
The Presidential Policy Forum for the 85th AMS Annual Meeting will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2005 from 10:00-12:00 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California. This year’s Presidential Policy Forum will feature a community dialog with both Peter Gleick and Gordon Young. Dr. Peter Gleick, a MacArthur Fellow, is also president and co-founder of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security, and puts out an ongoing publication, “The World’s Water: The Biennial Report on Freshwater Resources.” Dr. Young directs the United Nations World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP). In 2003, at the Third World Water Forum held in Tokyo, the WWAP released the document, “Water for People, Water for Life.” As of this writing, these two major assessments are shaping water resource policy formulation and decision support at the highest levels in governments worldwide.
The Presidential Policy Forum will consist of three parts. In the first, AMS President Susan K. Avery, Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and William H. Hooke, director of the AMS Policy Program, will engage these two experts in a conversation on the outlook for freshwater resources worldwide and the implications for water policy, both domestically and internationally. In the second, Dr. Young and Dr. Gleick will respond to questions submitted electronically prior to the forum. Finally, microphones will be opened for questions and (brief) comments from the floor.
