85th ANNUAL MEETING
AMS CAREER FAIR
Information for Employers
Information for Job Seekers
The AMS Career Fair, intended to facilitate the employment process for both applicants and recruiters, will be held in conjunction with the 85th AMS Annual Meeting (9-13 January 2005) in San Diego, California. The Career Fair is an excellent opportunity for employers or universities to interact with individuals seeking employment or graduate school opportunities. Participation in the AMS Career Fair is offered at no cost to participants.
Opening Night Reception
On the evening of Saturday, January 8, the Career Fair will open with a reception for attendees of the AMS Fourth Annual Student Conference. Following the reception’s buffet dinner, you will have a chance to meet with the students to promote your organization, distribute literature on job vacancies and graduate school opportunities, and schedule interviews for later in the week. Each participating employer or university will be provided with a table to display handouts and other information on their organizations.
The backdrop for this year’s Career Fair will be a poster display of career opportunities in the atmospheric and related sciences. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to tell the Career Fair attendees about your organization! Each participant will be allotted a 4' x 8' poster space; display panels will be available as well as pushpins and other art supplies. As long as you work within the size constraints, there’s no limit to what you can do…advertise a specific job opening, boast about your school’s graduate program, highlight your entry-level positions. Get creative! Even if you are unable to attend the reception, your poster submission is still welcomed. Ship it directly to the meeting or drop it off the before the event and we’ll take care of displaying it for you.
Career Fair tables and poster display space must be reserved in advance. Please send your request to Beth Farley by email (bfarley@ametsoc.org) as soon as possible but no later than 30 November 2004. Specific information about the Career Fair and opening night agenda will be e-mailed to you after we receive your reservation.
The Career Fair and Poster Display (see above for details) continues on Sunday, January 9 through Thursday, January 13. The Career Fair is an excellent opportunity to meet on-site, one-on-one, with the highly qualified individuals that attend the Annual Meeting. Promote your organization, review attendee resumes, and interview potential candidates all in one convenient location…and all at no cost! While Saturday night’s opening reception is open only to participants in the Student Conference, the Career Fair may be visited by any registered Annual Meeting attendee during its hours of operation (Sunday 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.; Monday 8:00 a.m. -7:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; Thursday 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m ). Space in the Career Fair is limited so be sure to reserve your table as soon as possible by emailing your request to bfarley@ametsoc.org. The deadline for reservations is 30 November.
If you are unable to reserve table space for all or part of the week, or if you can’t attend the Annual Meeting, simply provide us with a copy of your job announcement(s) by 31 December and we’ll post them to our ‘Positions Available’ board. Interested applicants will be encouraged to contact you via our Career Fair message board (for recruiters in attendance) or to forward their resumes to you after the meeting. Please submit job postings as an attached Word document or PDF by email to careerfair@ametsoc.org. Those recruiters who cannot meet the deadline may drop off their announcement during the fair's hours of operation.
Special Event…Career Fair participants that wish to promote their undergraduate program are encouraged to participate in our Fourth Annual Weatherfest event. Weatherfest provides an exclusive opportunity for your institution to reach a targeted audience of weather enthusiasts as well as high school students interested in pursuing a degree in the field. Ask for additional information on Weatherfest when reserving your Career Fair table!
On the evening of Saturday, January 8, the Career Fair will open with a reception for attendees of the AMS Fourth Annual Student Conference. This is a great opportunity for you to meet with employer and graduate school representatives in an informal setting and to schedule interviews for later in the week. We’re expecting a good turn-out of employer and graduate school representatives this year so make sure to have plenty of extra resumes to go around. Resumes sent to Headquarters prior to December 20 will be distributed to participating companies and schools prior to Saturday night’s reception. See the General Information section for information on how to submit your resume.
There is no cost to attend this opening night reception but you must be registered for the Student Conference. Annual Meeting attendees not eligible for the Student Conference may attend the Career Fair during its normal hours of operation (Sunday 10:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.; Monday 8:00 a.m. -7:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; Thursday 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m ).
The Career Fair continues on Sunday, January 9 through Thursday, January 13. The Career Fair is an excellent opportunity to interview on-site, one-on-one, with organizations looking to recruit highly talented individuals. View available employment opportunities, present resumes to employers who are seeking qualified applicants, and apply for positions all in one convenient location…and all at no cost! While Saturday night’s opening reception is open only to participants in the Student Conference, the Career Fair may be visited by any registered Annual Meeting attendee during its hours of operation (Sunday 10:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.; Monday 8:00 a.m. -7:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; Thursday 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m ). Since not all employers/graduate schools will reserve table space for the week, our Career Fair message board may be used to communicate with recruiters not in attendance.
While it is not necessary to register for participation in the Career Fair, all job seekers are encouraged to submit their resumes to AMS Headquarters prior to the annual meeting. Those that are received by the deadline will be distributed to employer participants prior to the Fair. We regret that we cannot accept resumes from non-attendees.
Annual Meeting and Student Conference attendees may submit a copy of their resume as an attached Word document or PDF to careerfair@ametsoc.org by December 20. Those applicants who cannot meet the deadline may drop off their resume during the fair's hours of operation.
