1. General Information: Mark your calendar now for the American Meteorological Society's (AMS) 82nd Annual Meeting where more than 2,000 of the world's leading meteorologists, hydrologists, earth and atmospheric scientists, researchers, science educators, and many others will gather to discuss a broad range of weather, climate and related topics. The 82nd Annual Meeting of the AMS will take place Sunday through Thursday, 1317 January 2002, at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida. Science sessions will be conducted from Monday through Thursday, 1417 January; short courses will take place on 1217 January 2002. And what a venue! In the middle of January we’ll all be ready for some warm Florida sunshine. |

2. Science Sessions and Special Events
This year's meeting is being structured around the broad theme of broad theme of generating environmental information and services looking at future improvements in forecast skill, user applications, the continuum of observation to prediction and data utilization, and the interfaces between developers and users. The two main symposia are: A set of presentations providing the “state of the science” within a few selected sub disciplines of our science is planned for this meeting, and it is expected to be the first in a series of such presentations at AMS Annual Meetings. The entire morning of 16 January, will be devoted to the Second Presidential Policy Forum entitled, “Society and The Society: What can the American Meteorological Society do to Better Foster Scientific Services for Society's Needs?”. The forum will focus on the relationship between the AMS and society in general. The meeting also will include a number of interdisciplinary conferences and symposia that have become traditional at AMS annual meetings, including: A complete list of all the planned sessions, abstracts, and extended abstracts are available on the AMS Annual Meeting web site once there click on Programs and Abstracts and then scroll down to the symposium or conference of interest. The full five-day schedule will appear for each symposium and conference. Governor Christine Todd Whitman, director of the Environmental Protection Agency, has been invited to give the opening address on Sunday, 13 January. Erik Larson, author of the Isaac’s Storm, a fascinating account of the September 1900 Galveston, Texas, hurricane, the worst natural disaster in America's history, will be the closing speaker on Thursday, 17 January. Master copies of abstracts/preprints will be available in the Press Room. A Meeting Program available in the Press Room that lists all activities planned for the week. 3. Hotel Information You can make your hotel reservations directly with your hotel of choice. All the information on nearby hotels and reservation form can be found on the AMS website. We encourage you to make reservations as soon as possible.

5. Press Room The AMS will operate a press room from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 13-17 January. Press releases relevant to the meeting will be available, as will a message board. A briefing room will be the site of press conferences and can also be used for individual interviews and live feeds.
6. Press Registration Press registrants receive a badge that provides access to any of the scientific sessions of the meeting, as well as to the Press Room and Briefing Room. No one will be admitted without a valid badge. A press registration form is at the end of this message. Press registration includes a press badge that allows access to all conferences, special programs and exhibits. A banquet and luncheon ticket is not included and can be purchased for $30 for a Luncheon ticket and $40 for a Banquet ticket.
