CLR Photonics, Inc, division of CTI, manufactures the WindTracer® Infrared Doppler Radar (LIDAR). This instrument provides high resolution wind data under clear air conditions.
Windshear, microbursts, turbulence and gust fronts are hazardous to the safe operation of many airports. The WindTracer® detects these hazardous winds at distances up to 10 km. An easy to use graphical user interface, with alarms, allows the user to quickly ascertain the severity and location of these conditions.
Airport capacity is a function of several interdependent events including the spacing between airplanes. This spacing is a result of the affect of wake vortices created by the airplane moving through the atmosphere. The WindTracer® is used to detect and measure these wake vortices in addition to the ambient wind conditions.
WindTracer® is also used to detect aerosol levels including those that may pose a health hazard such as biochemical aerosols in support of Homeland Defense.

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program is a Department of Energy research program to improve the performance of general circulation models (GCMs) for climate research and prediction. ARM is specifically focused on improving the representation of clouds and cloud-radiative interactions in climate models, but includes efforts to support a broader range of research objectives including the initiatives for water cycle and carbon cycle research. Data acquired from classical and state-of-the-art instrumentation in several climatologically significant sites are supporting the development of improved or new models and parameterizations. Current operational sites are in the southern Great Plains, the tropical western Pacific Ocean, and on the North Slope of Alaska. In FY 2003, DOE designated the ARM sites as a national scientific User Facility with the potential to contribute to a wide range of interdisciplinary research. Data from the sites are delivered to science team members and other requestors from the ARM Data Archive. ARM-improved, high-resolution radiative codes are being tested and evaluated in GCM large-scale weather prediction models, and ARM data are being used to evaluate the performance of global models to predict cloud heights and coverage. The ARM Program exhibit will feature information on sites and instrumentation, as well as computer-direct access to the ARM web site and illustrative data.

Weather Radar Systems
DRS Weather Systems (DRS-WS), formerly Enterprise Electronics Corporation (EEC), has been the world leader in weather radar systems since 1971. More than 800 X-, C- and S-band systems have been sold to US and foreign military forces, to the US National Weather Service (NWS), and to Meteorological Services and research centers all over the world. Weather detection and forecasting using radar took a quantum leap forward in 1981 when DRS Weather Systems, Inc. introduced the first commercial Doppler weather radar and pioneered the use of computers for radar control and data analysis. In 1999 DRS-WS introduced a state-of-the-art digital receiver and a new generation high power, fully coherent klystron C-band radar system that sets the benchmark for weather radar performance.
DRS leads the industry in advanced digital processing, advanced antenna drive systems and klystron transmitter/technology. In 2002 DRS introduced the next evolution in weather radar, Simultaneous Dual Polarization (SIDPOL). The proven radar development and manufacturing capabilities lead the US NWS to award a contract to DRS for the first new generation NEXRAD-type S-band klystron radar system. The system was installed in Evansville, Indiana in January 2003 and seamlessly integrated into the NWS nation-wide radar network.

In 1985 GEONOR developed a precipitation gage to study the possibility of predicting avalanches in the mountains of western Norway. We used vibrating wire sensor (VW) technology. Our parent research group: The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (DNMI) partnered in this development.
The VW sensor in our precipitation gages has proven long-term accuracy and reliability, has no moving parts, requires no internal heating, operates in low temperatures, interfaces easily, and uses low power.
In the last few years testing by research groups in the US and Canada has lead to a large increase in installation of our gages in North America, in both the private sector and by government agencies.
Currently GEONOR offers the T-200 series of 600-mm (24-inch) capacity gages, and an 850-mm (33.5-inch) prototype gage. A 1000-mm (39.4-inch) capacity gauge is under development.

The Global Hydrology and Climate Center (GHCC), located at the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) in Huntsville, Alabama, is a partnership of organizational elements of from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and the State of Alabama's Space Science and Technology Alliance, with facilities being provided by the University of Alabama - Huntsville. It is also co-located with the new Huntsville NWS Forecast Office. Our goal is to build a nationally recognized program in global hydrology. The primary focus of the research center is to understand the Earth's global water cycle, the distribution and variability of atmospheric water, and the impact of human activity as it relates to global and regional climate. The mix of government employees, university faculty and scientists, NWS forecasters and staff, and a large group of atmospheric science graduate students provides a critical blend of talent and manpower to address these challenging issues. Our vision is to provide unique, key measurements of the Earth system, particularly from the prospective of space, to conduct the analysis and synthesis of these data into climate studies, and to improve and validate predictive models of the Earth system on the global and regional scale. The development of a new NWS Forecast Office at GHCC provides a unique opportunity to transition this research to the operational community.

Radiometrics specializes in the manufacture of microwave radiometers for atmospheric sensing. The Radiometrics TP/WVP-3000 Temperature and Water Vapor Profiling Radiometer provides accurate temperature and humidity soundings up to 10 km height and a one layer cloud liquid sounding.
Radiometer soundings are comparable in accuracy to radiosonde soundings when used for weather modeling and forecasting. Updated soundings of the atmosphere above the observation site are available every minute.
The TP/WVP-3000 does not emit electromagnetic or acoustic interference and is fully operational during high winds. The radiometer design is highly reliable, having logged more than one million hours of automated operation in the tropics, the mid-latitudes and the Arctic.
The TP/WVP-3000 is the instrument of choice wherever continuous and accurate thermodynamic soundings are needed to support short term weather forecasting and dispersion modeling. Radiometrics is collaborating closely with Degreane Horizon in integrating the TP/WVP-3000 radiometer with the Degreane 1 GHz wind profiling system thus providing a continuous, cost-effective wind and thermodynamic profiling capability able to support such applications, as well as for and rainfall prediction. Come see us in booth 1014.

SIGMET, Inc. is the world's leading provider of signal and data processing systems for weather radar applications. Applications include operational radar systems and networks, air terminal wind shear detection, hydrology and research. SIGMET, Inc. has 22 years of experience in transferring technology from the research environment to operational systems
SIGMET's products for 2004 are a major breakthrough in how signal processing and radar control are performed. Rather than dedicated proprietary DSP chips, the RVP8 Digital IF Receiver and Doppler Signal Processor is based on a standard dual-processor Pentium system running under standard Linux. The RCP8 radar/antenna control processor is also based on the same PCI technology. The RVP8 performance is over 6 GFLOPS (as measured under DFT testing), which is seven times the speed of the fastest RVP7 of the previous generation. The new Antenna-Mounted Receiver (AMR) provides customers with an easy way to perform a dual-polarization upgrade to an existing system. The IRIS software for data acquisition, radar control/monitoring, product generation and display, is fully compatible with the new generation RVP8 and RCP8.
