AMS Student Assistant Program

Open to undergraduate AMS student members only.
Deadline has passed.

The Student Assistant Program provides partial travel support to students willing to assist AMS staff in administering the annual meeting. Student assistants help with various tasks, including meeting registration, book/retail exhibit, committee meetings, and audio visual requirements. When students are not working, they have the opportunity to attend sessions and visit the exhibit area. AMS provides all student assistants with hotel accommodations (which you will share with another student), meeting registration, a continental breakfast each morning, and a small per diem to help offset daily expenses. Students must secure their own travel arrangements to and from Phoenix.  AMS does not cover travel cost.

Students who are interested must be a current student member of AMS. If you are not a member and would like to become one apply online today.  Also, students must be referred by their academic advisor.  Names will be accepted until the designated number of assistant slots is met; a waiting list will be established after that time.  Please note that we will be accepting up to four students from any one school (unless the number of assistants needed is not met).  Students are not allowed to serve as a student assistant for more than two meetings.  Although the opportunity to be a student assistant is fun and educationally rewarding, it is also a demanding job and AMS takes this program very seriously.  We are looking for students that can work well with others, be depended upon, and are able and willing to take direction from AMS staff members.

The 8th Annual WeatherFest will be held Sunday, 11 January 2009 from 12:00 noon until 4:00 PM.  WeatherFest is an interactive four-hour science and weather fair free to the public.  WeatherFest Features weather demonstrations, hands-on weather and climate related activities and more.  A number of volunteers will be scheduled to work at this exhibit.  Students who are not scheduled to work during these hours are invited to attend this very eventful occasion.

To apply, complete the online application form and submit it no later than 17 October 2008.  If you are not a current student member, you will need to apply for membership prior to applying for a volunteer position.

To learn more about the benefits of membership visit our member service page.   Any questions regarding the student assistant program may be directed to Donna Sampson at dfernand@ametsoc.org or 617‑227‑2426 ext. 246. Applicants will be notified, via e‑mail, by the end of October, as to whether or not they have been accepted for the student assistant position.
