Spotlight: ADVANCEing equity, inclusion, and justice in AMS programs
At the September Council meeting in Boston, the ADVANCEGeo Partnership led a workshop for the AMS Executive Committee, Council, Commissioners, and staff leadership to build awareness of the impacts of microaggressions, and develop skills to create inclusive communication and act as an upstander when microaggressions occur.
The National Science Foundation ADVANCE Program has renewed funding for the ADVANCEGeo Partnership to expand their work. As a new member of this Partnership, AMS looks forward to working with ADVANCEGeo in building a more inclusive weather, water, and climate enterprise.
The workshop, made possible by a generous grant from the American Institute of Physics, is just one example of efforts being undertaken by AMS to integrate equity, inclusion, and justice in AMS programmatic activities. If you are interested in supporting the important initiatives that integrate equity, inclusion, and justice and foster a sense of belonging at AMS, please consider making a donation to the AMS DEI Initiatives Fund.

Unlike perhaps most BAMS readers, I had no interest in meteorology until my mid-twenties, as I grew up in the UK under mostly benign weather. But I knew that I wanted to apply mathematics to something of direct importance to society."

The plants thereon are sedges, mosses, lichens, and a few small shrubs. Tundra is mostly underlaid by permafrost, with the result that drainage is bad and the soil may be saturated for long periods. It does not have a permanent snow–ice cover.
