Spotlight: Glossary Translation Project | | |
Creating the Glossary of Meteorology en Español |
|
AMS has launched a pilot project to translate our
authoritative, peer-reviewed Glossary of Meteorology into Spanish. View our translated entries on this page!
The AMS Glossary of Meteorology is a pivotal resource in the meteorological community, offering over 12,000 scientifically defined terms and serving over half a million users annually. However, language barriers limit access to this essential reference among global non-English-speaking communities, including many Spanish speakers in the United States. Bridging this gap by translating the free, online Glossary could dramatically enhance understanding and safety, ensuring that vital meteorological information is accessible to all.

Planning Update
In early January, AMS Executive Director Stella Kafka informed our members of a new strategic planning effort, in partnership with CAP (Harvard’s Community Action Partners). Areas under discussion include Membership, Financial Strategy, and Mission/Vision. To gather data on Membership, starting in February CAP will be reaching out with surveys and possibly requests to participate in member focus groups. Members are an integral part of AMS, and your experiences and input are essential to the planning of our future, so make your voice heard! Thanks in advance for your help and feedback.

““[T]he exact moment meteorology captured my heart was when I watched a documentary on lightning at …maybe 13 years old.... [T]hat documentary shocked me. I began looking up more documentaries about weather. With each video clip of a tornado in the Central Plains or a satellite image of a hurricane’s eye, I knew choosing a career path would be easy.”
— Muhammad Naufal Razin (Colorado State University), whose BAMS article details TC PRIMED, a comprehensive digital dataset of tropical cyclone–centric satellite passive microwave observations, environmental data, and other related products. Read more of his interview in your
